Kansas state line south of Pawnee City. NE 65, a gravel state highway, turns into a paved county road.

The switch from asphalt to gravel marks the official southern beginning of NE 65. No signs, shields, or markers are placed here to denote the state line.

About 1/4 mile north of the NE/KS line, the first evidence of state maintenance appears: a sign noting Nebraska's mandatory seat-belt law. An odd speed limit sign appears beyond the first: "SPEED LIMIT 50/TRUCKS WITH TRAILERS 50".

Finally, about 1/2 mile north of the state line, an NE 65 shield appears. NE 65 will not see pavement for an additional 5 miles, making it one of the few remaining gravel sections on the state highway system.
