US 73 | |||||||
Length: 22 miles Southern Terminus: Kansas state line south of Falls City (with US 159) Northern Terminus: Junction with US 75 1 mile north of Dawson Designated in Nebraska: 1926 (may not have been signed until 1927) County Passed Through: Richardson Multiplex: US 159 - 4 miles from the Kansas state line to Falls City History: An original 1926 route, US 73 replaced NE 5 (I) from the Kansas border to south of Auburn. In 1933, US 73 was extended along US 75 north to Omaha, where it then continued along the remaining segments of NE 5 (I) to Tekamah, where US 73 split into US 73E (which absorbed NE 51) and US 73W (which followed "mainline" NE 5 (I)). In 1957, US 73E/W was decommissioned. In 1965, US 73 was truncated to Winnebago. In 1984, US 73 was truncated to north of Dawson, as US 75 was shifted to the Nebraska side of the Missouri River north of Omaha. |

US 75 | |||||||
Length: 185 miles Southern Terminus: Kansas state line south of Dawson Northern Terminus: Iowa state line at South Sioux City (multiplexed with I-129) Designated in Nebraska: 1926 Counties Passed Through: Richardson, Nemaha, Otoe, Cass, Sarpy, Douglas, Washington, Burt, Thurston, Dakota Expressway Segments: 3 miles along the Nebraska City bypass; 3 miles in southern Sarpy County from the Platte River north to the Kennedy Freeway; 5 miles in northern Douglas County; 3 miles between Dakota City and the I-129 interchange Multiplexes:
History: US 75 is an orginal 1926 route, replacing NE 33 (II) from the Kansas state line to Auburn and NE 5 (I) from Auburn to Omaha. Before 1984, US 75 crossed into Iowa at Omaha and contined along the current I-29 corridor. In 1984, US 75 was routed north from Omaha to Sioux City along US 73, which was then truncated to just north of Dawson. |

US 77 | |||||||
Length: 189 miles Southern Terminus: Kansas state line south of Wymore Northern Terminus: Iowa state line at South Sioux City Designated in Nebraska: 1926 Counties Passed Through: Gage, Lancaster, Saunders, Dodge, Burt, Thurston, Dakota Expressway Segments: 36 miles from Beatrice to SW Lincoln; 13 miles from I-80 (Exit 405) to Ceresco; 11 miles from Fremont to Winslow; 6 miles from Dakota City to Iowa state line Multiplexes:
History: US 77 is an orginal 1926 route, replacing NE 9 from the Kansas state line to Oakland and NE 5 (I) from Oakland to the Iowa border. Nebraska submitted US 77 from I-80 to the Iowa state line for inclusion in the Interstate Highway System in 1968; this request was turned down (except for what later became I-129 in South Sioux City). It has been realigned very little since except in the Lincoln area, where it was rerouted onto the Homestead Expressway and I-80 in 1993. US 77 from Ceresco to Fremont will be upgraded to Nebraska Expressway standards by the end of the decade; construction on a expressway segment from Ceresco to a new bypass around Wahoo will start this year. |

History: US 81 is an orginal 1926 route, replacing NE 4 (I) along its entire length. The only major realignment for US 81 has been from Norfolk north, where the current routing was straightened to avoid running through towns. Much of former US 81 in this area is NE 121. |

US 83 | |||||||
Length: 222 miles Southern Terminus: Kansas state line south of McCook Northern Terminus: South Dakota state line north of Valentine Designated in Nebraska: 1931 Counties Passed Through: Red Willow, Frontier, Lincoln, Logan, Thomas, Cherry Expressway Segment: 4 miles from I-80 (Exit 177) south Multiplexes:
History: US 83 was extended through Nebraska in 1931, connecting previously commissioned north and south segments. Originally, US 83 and US 183 ran more or less opposite their current routings in Nebraska; US 83 ran generally along US 183's present alignment. US 83 and US 183 were swapped into their present alignments in the early 1940's (around 1942?). US 83's current alignment from Thedford to south of Valentine through the Sand Hills was constructed in the 1940's. US 83 was shifted to a new alignment from North Platte to Thedford in the 1950's; the old alignment became NE 97. |
